About this game
GBHack is a Game Boy Color dungeon crawler inspired by NetHack. Descend through a changing dungeon, find the Amulet of Yendor, then try to return to the surface. Rooms contain monsters, items and other encounters, while a companion follows your adventurer. Movement and many actions advance turns, so check your health and food before pressing ahead.
The arrows move your character. Hold Z, the Game Boy B button, with two adjoining arrows for a diagonal step. Tap Z on its own to pick up an item underfoot or rest when there is nothing to collect. X opens the action menu for inventory, food, potions and other commands.
Enter opens the character sheet; Tab opens the system menu, including Help and Save+Quit. Use those screens to learn what your character is carrying before spending a turn on an uncertain action. Death ends the run, so a cautious retreat can be more useful than another attack.
