About this game
Word Rescue combines a platform adventure with English word-and-picture matching. Made by Redwood Games and published by Apogee in 1992, it puts you in a world troubled by Gruzzles, with Benny Bookworm helping you put the words back where they belong.
Exploration and reading are linked: find a word, then identify its matching picture. A wrong match can bring another Gruzzle into the level. Benny can cover a nearby Gruzzle with slime, but the supply is limited, so it pays to think before trying a picture.
On the first run, type a player name and press Enter, then choose a character and follow the introductory screens. Left and Right move; Up or Alt jumps or climbs, and Down moves down. Space or Ctrl calls the slime action. W shows the word list and H opens the built-in help. On a phone, use More keys / keyboard for the name prompt.
This is the original DOS 2.0 shareware Part 1 from Apogee. The game’s words and menus remain in English; the Chinese page translates the website guidance, not the vocabulary puzzle itself. The other parts are not included.
