About this game

In Search of Dr. Riptide is a 1994 underwater action game from Mindstorm Software, published by Pack Media Company. You play Nick Nautilus, sent to find the hidden laboratory of Dr. Tiberius Riptide. Instead of running across platforms, you pilot a submarine through caverns, hazards and hostile sea life.

The small JASON submersible is more than a companion: once obtained, it can explore spaces the main submarine cannot reach. The game also uses keys, caves and weapon pieces to give its scrolling shooting stages an exploration element. Watch both air and shields rather than treating every pickup as a straightforward improvement.

This page hosts the original DOS 1.1 shareware package, not the registered game. The included license and vendor notice permit free electronic distribution. Original files and notices are retained. The package's README specifically warns about digital-sound problems; browser play uses its documented -PCSOUND option, with PC-speaker effects instead of the digital-sound path that stalled during our startup check.

Press Enter after the title sequence, choose a difficulty and confirm. In play, the arrows move the submarine and Space fires. Ctrl or Alt handles cave entry and JASON control when available. Esc opens the menu, which also contains Instructions and a Password entry; record any passwords the game supplies rather than assuming an ordinary save-slot system.

Quick tips

Shield pickups restore protection but reduce firepower, according to the original README; collect them when you need the trade-off.

Shoot barrels cautiously: the game warns that they can contain either useful items or enemies.

The pulse cannon requires all its parts before it becomes available; the README specifies 50 shots once assembled.

Use Esc to reach Instructions or adjust game speed. The original README recommends Slow when a stage feels too difficult.
